More outdoor leisure facilities, such as a mountain bike track, could be built at Farnley Estates’ land.

The estate, which features 1,500 acres of countryside around Farnley Tyas, is looking to develop new activities on its large plot of land.

The estate already hosts riding and shooting but it is thought many more sports and leisure groups could be accommodated.

Farnley Estates’ bosses have already begun working with youngsters from Kirkburton Parish Council Youth Engagement Group.

Ideas already mooted include an ice skating rink, mountain boarding and cycling courses and a camp site.

“We feel that it’s vital that today’s young people have a say in our plans,” said Paul Sykes, Director Farnley Estates.

“We’re currently developing a 25-year plan for the Estate, to ensure that it remains both environmentally and economically sustainable for generations to come.

“We need to know that the ideas we’re proposing are of interest to all age groups, including young people – after all, these are the people who we want to benefit from the Estate in years to come,” added Paul.

The youth group, which includes youngsters from Shelley High School, and Kirkburton and Scissett Middle Schools, is putting forward views on what facilities they would like to see.

Farnley Estates has already presented at the group’s meeting and has given the young people a tour of the estate to give them an idea of its potential.

One student commented: “I didn’t realise that Farnley Estates covered such a large area. To have somewhere in Huddersfield, where we can go cycling, mountain boarding and try other new activities would be amazing.”

More than 300 groups have already been consulted over the past 12 months about greater access to Farnley Estates’ land, including charities, schools, universities, rural businesses, clubs and sporting associations.

Other ideas floated have ranged from forest schools to farm shops and from equestrian centres to aerial adventure courses.
