NEW interpretation boards have been unveiled in Denby Dale telling people about local history and the wildlife they may see when walking over two of the oldest bridges in the parish.

The boards, funded by the Mirfield, Denby Dale Area and Kirkburton Committee, are located at the Clapper Bridge under the railway viaduct in Denby Dale and at the Pack Horse Bridge in Clayton West.

Both of these river crossings have played their part in the industrial development of the parish providing trade routes in times before the current road crossings.

Committee chairman Elaine Ward said: “These boards give a representation of the history which forged Denby Dale parish with the wildlife information showing some of the more common species to be found within the locality of the River Dearne which has been the life blood of the area.”

Both panels were installed by volunteers from the Denby Dale Parish Countryside Project.

Pupils from Kayes’ First and Nursery School in Clayton West worked on their design and Farmer Design Associates turned the children’s ideas turned into colourful and informative panels.

The project was assisted by Kirklees Streetscene.
