SO now it’s congestion charges and car- sharing lanes! What is wrong with these people when it is they who have caused the congestion in the first place?

In the early 1970s umpteen thousand pounds was spent on widening New Hey Road, building a subway to make it safe for the schoolchildren to cross the road. And what do these people do nearly 40 years on? Fill in the subway because of undesirables and narrow the road by placing obstructions in it. For example, bus stops in the middle of the road, unnecessary traffic lights, badly-placed islands sticking out for no reason, allowing a supermarket at the junction of a very busy main road, allowing a housing development, then taking a lane out of a dual carriageway.

Who is their right mind places a zebra crossing in the middle of a five road junction with a bus stop at either side? Did these people not learn a lesson from the road hump fiasco in Dalton that cost the rate payers over £1m.
