A young enterprising couple have raised a glass to celebrate their new riverside wine bar.

Sophie Byram, 23, and Ryan Clifford, 27, hope that their Peel One bar encourages more young people to make the most of Marsden’s nightlife, instead of heading into Huddersfield and beyond.

The shrewd couple, who live in the area, have been working around the clock for the last four months to turn the Peel Street venue, which was formerly home to the Roobarb gift shop, from a ‘run down’ shell into a modern-style hub with its own riverside balcony in time for Easter.

It will have a large bar area and two floors of seating, and is expected to provide full and part time jobs for around nine people.

Sophie, who worked in bars whilst studying for a law degree, said: “We didn’t think that there were many options for young people who wanted a night out in the village.

“We thought that opening a wine bar would encourage people our age to spend more of their time here instead of heading into Huddersfield for a drink.

“My parents bought the building and we are leasing it off them.

“We’ve undergone a massive refurbishment and it looks very different to when we first saw it.”

She will manage the bar full time with the help of Ryan, who also works as a decorator.

She said: “It’s a big challenge but we’re both really looking forward to it.

“Although we’re young Ryan’s already got his own decorating business.

“And I’ve been working in business for the last few years, so we’re confident that between us we can make it work.”

Peel One will open from 10am to 11pm Sunday to Thursday and from 10am to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
