A student is celebrating beating thousands to win a scholarship at a top college in America.

Jack Hardwick, a student at Greenhead College, has bagged a place studying at Carleton College.

The top ranked liberal arts college is based in the historic river town of Northfield in Minnesota.

To gain his place Jack took part in an intensive summer residential programme.

He competed with 2,200 applicants to win one of only 125 places on the Sutton Trust US University programme.

The aim of the programme is to encourage young talented British students to consider studying in America.

It offers opportunities which previously would have been beyond their grasp.

Jack’s achievement is particularly impressive as he is one of only 35 students to have been accepted at the very first early round.

He started the process over 12 months ago and wants to encourage others to give it a go.

Jack will start his four year undergraduate course in early September.

He will live on campus and plans to major in music.

Jack said: “I can’t wait to start.

“I’m not going as an observer – I really want to get under the skin of the people and different way of life there.”

He also praised the Sutton Trust for its support which he described as ‘amazing’.
