A tired looking park is to be renovated at last.

Kings Head Gardens, Holmfirth, has been earmarked for renovation for five years.

But plans to revamp the outdated site had been delayed due to council cuts.

A £200,000 plan to turn the park into Holmfirth Heritage Garden – including a bronze statue of Last of the Summer Wine star, Bill Owen – was scrapped last March owing to budget cuts.

But the scheme has been replaced by a proposal which is expected to cost £64,000.

It includes natural stone surfaces and a mosaic depicting Holmfirth’s industrial heritage.

Work will begin on the site at the end of this month after £21,500 was approved at an area committee meeting on October 24.

Holme Valley South councillor Ken Sims said: “It’ll look brilliant when it’s done.

“The gardens will be redone so shoppers can sit there and workers can enjoy their lunch there in the summer.”

Commenting on the new plan which will cost a fraction of the original scheme, Clr Sims added: “We’ve certainly dug, delved and dived into the costing.”

The original park was built in the early 1970s, on the former site of the Kings Head pub, as part of Holmfirth District Council’s General Improvement Area scheme.
