The best green fingered growers have been picked by a top gardener.

Kirkburton Parish Council held an allotment competition this summer for the best kept allotments at its sites at Grange Moor and Shepley.

The competition was judged by former Examiner gardening columnist, Graham Porter, who had a very difficult job choosing the winners.

Mr Porter made a surprise visit to the sites at Wakefield Road and Marsh Lane as the date of the judging had been a closely guarded secret.

He chatted to tenants who were tending their allotments at the time offered helpful tips and advice.

The winner at Grange Moor was Linda Gilbert and the runner up was Lynn Willis.

In Shepley, the winner was Raymond Horn and the runners up were Trudy Mansfield and Christine Mellor, who share an allotment.

All prize winners were presented with gift vouchers and rosettes at a presentation ceremony at Shepley allotments at the weekend.
