COUNCIL officials said “sorry” last night – after gravestones were used in wall repairs.

And they acted quickly to remove a stone after angry Netherton residents insisted it was in appalling taste.

The blunder was discovered after Kirklees Council workers completed repairs on a stretch of drystone wall off Bourn View Road.

The words ‘the beloved’ and ‘who died’ could clearly be seen.

Residents were shocked to see stones bearing memorial inscriptions in the wall and one, Rob Campbell, said: “This is a clear disregard for other people’s feelings”.
