JOIN the Kirklees Countryside Volunteers for a series of walks and key tasks this month and April – but remember to confirm details first.

Tomorrow (Sunday): Monastic Meander 2 – a six-mile medium, theme walk. Meet David at 10.30am in Mirfield Library car park, Station Road, Mirfield, for a walk on field paths and minor roads, with big views and a bit of history.

Saturday March 26: Clothiers Bound – a six-seven-mile ‘medium’, linear walk. Meet Tony at 10.45am at the Railway/Bus Interchange, off Wakefield Road (A636), in Denby Dale, for a walk along lanes, field paths and through woods, finishing at Shepley Station.

Saturday April 2: Church, Calder and Canal – a seven-mile ‘easy’ walk. Meet Marie-Claire at 10.30am at Mirfield Parish Church, Dunbottle Lane/Church Lane, Mirfield, for a walk including historical buildings and a nature reserve.

Sunday April 3: Pathfinder Day – learn how to read a map, then put your newly acquired skill into practice on a three-four-mile walk under the friendly supervision of a Kirklees countryside volunteer. A packed lunch and walking gear will be needed. For further information telephone 01484 423944. Attenders should be over 16. Booking is essential and a deposit of £5 per person is requested to secure a place. This will be refunded when you attend. Payment must be received at least one week before the course. Saturday, April 9: Barnside And Beyond – a 12¼-mile ‘hard’ walk. Meet Oliver at 10am at Jackson Bridge, off A616 Sheffield Road, for a walk in upland countryside with sweeping views, but some rough going!

Thursday, April 14: The Rocks of The Folly Dolly Falls – a one-and-a-half-mile ‘easy’ theme walk. Meet Alison Tymon of the Huddersfield Geology Group at 6.30pm in the car park behind the Carlile Institute, off Huddersfield Road (B6108), Meltham and learn about this fascinating geological feature. Wellies essential!

Sunday, April 17: Path Clearance (conservation) – meet the volunteers at 10am at the junction of Hightown Road and St Barnabas Road, Hightown, Cleckheaton, and help clear an heavily overgrown path. Ring Nigel on 07746 973281 (evenings) for more details.

Friday, April 22: Hartshead Holiday Hike – a five-and-a-half-mile ‘medium’ walk. Meet Oliver at 1.30pm at St Peter’s Church, Hartshead (on Church Lane) and view relics of the past on both sides of the M62 on this rural stroll.

Monday, April 25: Hill, Fox, How and Clock – a six-seven-mile medium walk. Meet Liz at 10.30am near the New Inn, Liley Lane (B6118), Grange Moor, for gently-paced bank holiday breather through rolling countryside.

Saturday, April 30: Another Corny Walk – an eight-nine-mile ‘medium walk’. Meet Susan at 9.45am outside the railway station on Station Road, Stocksmoor, for a walk through a spring landscape.
