Delve into your family history at Brighouse Library. Calderdale Family History Society will be at the library on January 3 and 8 to help people search more about their family history or local history. Facilities include searchable information on four computers, Calderdale Church of England Churches information, Ancestry.com searches and a wide range of books, journals, and cuttings. Greater Elland Historical Society will be at Elland Library to help people learn more about the history of the town. Members will be there on Thursday and Saturday next week from 2-4pm and on Tuesday, January 8 from 10am-midday. The research room will be open and manned by volunteers to help with enquiries.

Work off that extra helping of Christmas pudding with a walk. Calderdale Heritage Walks lead the ramble around Halifax Markets tomorrow, Friday. Meet David Nortcliffe for a look at several markets, past and present, especially the fine Borough Market – walkers will look inside, outside and around that, plus a little behind the scenes. Heritage walks are generally two hours of fairly easy walking and are suitable for accompanied children over the age of 13. No need to book, just turn up and pay on the day. It’s £3 to take part in and begins at 2pm by the Piece Hall’s North Gate (Woolshops side).
Take a New Year stroll round Hebden Bridge on Thursday, January 3. Meet Alastair Bishop for a one-and-a-half hour walk around Hebden Water. Two steep gradients, taken slowly, are included in the walk. Meet at 10.30am at the Valley Road Group Practice, Hebden Bridge.
