FOR 130 years they’ve been a ‘boys only’ brass band and they’ve won countless awards.

But now the Yorkshire champions have welcomed their first woman.

Cornet player Laura Hirst has made history by becoming the first woman to be welcomed into a permanent position with the band.

They wanted the best and Laura was it – she got her place purely on merit.

And while some band members were unsure about recruiting their first woman, Laura’s talent quickly won them over.

While she may be the first, band members say it won’t be long before other women join them, but Laura’s made a little bit of history which she should rightly be proud of.
