THE Waterfront regeneration scheme has been hit by funding delays in the wake of cost-cutting measures introduced by the Government.

Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency which is set to be abolished, says it will defer funding of around £1.3m for the Waterfront Quarter which will help reinvigorated the site at Chapel Hill.

Plans to relocate Kirklees College campus to the sprawling site are unaffected as separate funding for that move has been secured. Groundwork is already underway.

What is at risk is the wider project, the biggest private-public sector development likely to be seen in Huddersfield for years.

Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan fears delay could mean a funding cut but has vowed the project will go ahead.

It is surely vital that the town is committed to efforts to bring further investment to Kirklees in order to support jobs and safeguard all our futures.
