LEAD thieves have struck yet another church in the area leaving the damaged building with rain pouring into the hall below.
Thieves struck at the Methodist Church in Slaithwaite on Monday afternoon, ripping off lead flashing and leaving a trail of damage behind.
It is heartbreaking for the hard working church community to see all their efforts in providing a focal point for local activities disrupted in this way.
For as church steward John Scott pointed out, the amount that the thieves will get for the stolen lead compared to the cost of repairing the damage is ridiculous.
Lead thefts seem to be sporadic and a number of churches have been targeted as the demand for scrap metal rises.
Police say that without witnesses or reliable CCTV there is little they can do though they will investigate further if more information comes to light.
And that is perhaps the nub of this problem. The key to resolving thefts that inflict huge costs in terms of disruption and upset is for people to be watchful.
These are village facilities which are being targeted and communities can surely help by reporting any suspicious behaviour to police.
