There were high hopes when local businessmen Mick and Barry Thandi first acquired the hotel that had long stood on the Castle Hill site. Planners agreed for them to extend and renovate the building which had provided a beacon of hospitality alongside the Jubilee Tower.
It is four years since workmen last busied themselves on Castle Hill. But their job was to demolish what was left of the old building, not to create anything which would grace this stunning site and provide much needed facilities for the many who go there to enjoy the inspiring landscape.
There are suggestions that a judgement could be imminent on whether the latest development plans submitted are workable.
In the current economic climate it will be no easy call. But whatever the economics, the decision must surely be based on what is best for this iconic site and for the community that Castle Hill has stood guard over for generations.
