THE National Blood Service adverts urge us to ‘do something amazing’ by giving blood.

Well, five Huddersfield blood donors have proved themselves more than amazing – each donating on at least 75 occasions.

All have received NBS long-service awards after giving 375 pints of blood between them, saving as many as 1,125 lives.

Giving blood takes about an hour, it isn’t very painful and you even get a cup of tea and biscuit afterwards.

Nobody loves needles, but facing that fear could make you a real hero – your pint of blood could save three lives.

It could be used to save accident victims, cancer patients, or even help people needing regular transfusions for anaemia.

But at any one time, there is only about a week’s supply of blood in the NBS banks.

It is not the sort of thing you can store for long periods, which is why it is vital people become regular donors.

Few donors show the years of dedication that these five people have demonstrated.

When just 4% of people who could give blood actually do, they provide a shining example to us all.
