MP Kali Mountford has hit out at Kirklees Council’s consultation process over plans to build more homes in the Colne Valley.

Under the new Local Development Framework – passed down from Government – Kirklees Council has to build 37,000 new homes in the district.

Some of them are in the Colne Valley. Ms Mountford says residents have not had proper consultation and says the council has not taken account of how extra housing will impact on the local environment and infrastructure.

It is Ms Mountford’s Labour Government which has imposed more housing on Kirklees Council, which somehow has to meet this demand.

The rationale behind this level of building is hard to understand, at a time when the housing market is struggling.

Kirklees Council is under an obligation to build these extra houses somewhere. They may well need to consult residents better.

But, Ms Mountford and other Labour MPs also have a part to play – by demanding that the Government reconsiders its demands for more housing.
