IT’S so easy to become parochial and inward-looking, especially when times are tough.
So it’s heartening to learn that Helme’s village school looks far beyond Huddersfield and the UK to an impoverished country thousands of miles away.
The children have links with the Buyaka School in rural south east Uganda and they now have a £1,500 grant to make those links even stronger.
The scheme is run by the government and the British Council and the pupils in Helme are learning that no matter how hard life can sometimes be here, it’s nothing compared with the deprivations children their age suffer daily thousands of miles away.
It’s a lesson that will stand them in good stead for life.
