I AM writing on behalf of my brother and family (and anyone else this might affect), who live on the south side of Kirklees ie Denby Dale, Scissett, Clayton West etc regarding changes to our hospital services.

A very recent experience highlighted the problems and difficulties caused by having a big change forced upon us – the necessity to travel 19-20 miles (one way) on some of the most appalling roads in Kirklees. On this occasion, I refer to the A629 Huddersfield to Halifax in particular, a journey that can take one hour, or more, when travelling from the areas mentioned.

The journey is bad enough to have to contend with when you have a brother with special needs having to face dental treatment (under general anaesthetic) arriving at Calderdale Royal Hospital for 11:30am and not leaving until 7:10pm that same evening.

Did the health trusts consider those who do not have access to a private car? Did they even consider such a drab journey individuals would have to make by public transport, or even taxi? Probably not.

I cannot deny that Calderdale Royal Hospital staff were extremely caring and kind during my brother’s short stay and that they work very hard, but it still beggars the question – why do we have to struggle when there are probably other public health services that can offer the same provision somewhat nearer to home eg Barnsley General Hospital, Wakefield Pinderfields?

It seems ludicrous to put people with special needs, as well as those with certain disabilities, under such anxiety. This is only aggravated by a long, uncomfortable journey.

It is an important issue, not just a matter of individuals being deliberately difficult or complaining. And the authorities should look at repairing the desperately neglected worn out roads.

Someone being faced with a real emergency having to make a 20 mile journey, does not bear thinking about.
