SO the Wimbledon fortnight is now underway and all eyes will be on the British hopes for the tournament.

Andy Murray came so close to winning last year, losing in the final, and everyone will be hoping that after winning the US Open he can now get another Grand Slam under his belt on home turf.

But for others to follow in his footsteps they need the drive, determination and also the opportunity.

Many simply don’t have that chance but one Huddersfield school, Newsome High School and Sports College, has put tennis at the top of its sports agenda.

At a time when many schools are losing their playing fields it’s heartening to see a school putting its principles into practice and how that is paying off with its pupils reaching standards they may never have hoped to achieve.

The opportunity is there for all, but for those showing real ability Newsome does all it can to take them to the next level.

It proves once more that schools are far more than simply all about classroom subjects and exams.

They should be places where pupils learn lessons about life itself which broaden their outlook on the world and their self-esteem, raising their personal goals.
