NEWS that the M62 between Huddersfield and Leeds is one of the most congested roads in Britain is, in effect, not news to the thousands of drivers who endure that misery every day.

The motorway is badly snarled up just about all day around juncton 27 at Birstall and it is often nose-to-tail all the way from junction 25 at Brighouse to Leeds and back every morning and evening peak period.

For years the poor motorist has had to fork out ever-spiralling road tax and yet only a small percentage is ploughed back into improving the overstretched road network.

The only way forward is to come up with drastic solutions such as allowing traffic to use the hard shoulder at peak periods with refuges every few hundred yards for vehicles that break down.

If not, the misery will be relentless for years to come – especially now we are in a deep recession.
