MELTHAM turned back the clock for a mid-July feast of pure nostalgia.

The 1940s Celebration Weekend featured a three-day programme packed with special events and activities – with something for everyone!

Older residents were able to re-live memories of wartime, while those too young to remember experienced a glimpse of life the way it was, 65 to 70 years ago.

Leaflets went out to more than 3,000 homes to let people know what was in store for the fun weekend.

On the Saturday the church hall at Green End Road was a veritable hive of activity, starting from 10am-noon when the church ladies invited visitors to their ’40s style coffee morning with Jack Hutson serving up a selection of songs, big-band style.

Definitely not to be missed was the display of Meltham memories in St Bartholomew’s Church when visitors took a trip down memory lane and were given the chance to see how many familiar faces and places they could spot.

Meanwhile over in the church hall, Meltham Over 60s were serving afternoon wartime teas.

Outdoor events during the day included a parade of vintage vehicles assembled at Meltham Sports and Social Club, Mean Lane. Refreshments were served and then the parade moved off at noon, led by Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, into the Market Place.

Meltham Fire Station, on Holmfirth Road, was open to visitors with more memories of times past, along with face painting and fun for the children.

In the village centre there was ’40s-themed country stalls and displays of memorabilia in shop windows.

Other entertainment was provided by Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, St Bartholomew's Church, the Gilbert andSullivan society and more melodies through the mists of time from Norman Mellor and Jack Hutson.

The church hall hosted a Saturday night supper dance. Jump, Jive and Wail provided the live music until 11pm.

On the Sunday morning Meltham Churches Together held a service of celebration at St Bartholomew's, followed by refreshments in the hall.

Richard Ryden, the official Meltham Memories photographer captured the event on camera during the weekend and photographs will go on display in the village.
