PRIZED Holmfirth Harrier Matthew Pierson made history last weekend when he won the bronze medal in the English National Half Marathon Championships at Wilmslow, Cheshire.
This was a tremendous achievement as he is the first senior Holmfirth athlete ever to win an individual medal in a national championship event.
Sunday’s race also incorporated the English National Championships.
Matthew was fourth in the race in a new personal best time of 65 minutes and 53 seconds, but finished third in the English Championship and took the bronze medal as the runner who actually finished third did not qualify for the championship.
The race is part of Matthew’s preparation for the London Marathon, where he hopes to improve on last year’s time of 2 hours 34 minutes.
Richard Smith from Holmfirth also ran at Wilmslow on Sunday and finished in a personal best time of 73 minutes and 10 seconds.
Another Holmfirth Harriers competitor, Phil Martin, finished in 81minutes and 2 seconds.
The Wilmslow race was won by Mark Miles from Belgrave Harriers in a time of 64 minutes and 10 seconds.
