An army of fundraising women have launched a massive campaign to help give a historic landmark and community venue a new lease of life.

Several members of Marsden’s Loose Women group are planning a jam-packed calendar of events to encourage residents to use the 150-year-old Marsden Mechanics hall and to raise money for its redevelopment.

The hall, which is owned by Kirklees Council but managed by a volunteer community, is currently the subject of a community transfer bid that will eventually see it brought under the sole ownership of the village, in a deal identical to one involving Meltham’s Carlisle Institute.

But after the move thousands of pounds will need to be raised to keep the building at the heart of the community for future generations.

The group will launch their bid with a table top sale on June 8 from 11 to 3pm and have planned a 40s night for September 14.

Member, Janet Maude, who is also the manager of the hall, said that it was an exciting time for the building but that they need support from the community to turn hopes to increase its size to allow more activities and events into a reality.

She said: “Our group got the idea after holding a successful cake sale last month in which we raised over £800.

“We hope that we can replicate our success with this new cause and ensure that the community is aware of the importance of the building.

“It needs to be here because it offers a great place for people to meet and put on events that benefit people who live nearby.

“It would be such a shame if it could not continue to operate due to a lack of use or money in the future.

“We are open to more ideas for events and would love a 40s entertainer to help us out in September.”
