GET ready for a blast from the past this summer as a town prepares itself for a return to the 1940s.

The sixth annual Meltham Memories Wartime Weekend takes place around the village from Friday July 5 to Sunday July 7.

Meltham C of E School will play host to Second World War re-enactments and children’s activities.

On Friday there will be a performance by the popular Swing Commanders followed by a performance by the 18-piece Greater Manchester Police Big Band, on Saturday.

The popular weekend, which last year attracted 8,000 visitors, will be preceded by a Great Escape themed run from the Waggon and Horses pub, this Sunday (March 3), and a murder mystery evening at Meltham Church Hall, on Saturday May 4.

Event chairman Steve Aldred said: “We are grateful to the school for allowing us to use their site. It is accessible and so close to the centre of the village, it is ideal.

“We will be offering an exciting opportunity for the pupils of all three schools in Meltham to come face-to-face with what life in the trenches was really like.”
