THE team at Stainland Lions do a lot for the community, from organising the Boxing Day fun run, to top-class running events and supporting the vulnerable people in society.

John Bassinder, former chairman of the Lions, is proud they’ve raised more than £40,000 from the Boxing Day fun runs in Stainland, which attracts runners from near and far for the annual tradition.

Best thing that happened to your area in 2012: “The Olympic Torch passing through and for Halifax the Broad Street Plaza – a cinema at last!”

What frustrated me most: “We look after two Almshouses for the elderly; we always have residents in and out of hospital.

“Why do they have to send Halifax people to Huddersfield hospital and Huddersfield people to Halifax, sometimes for the same procedure?

New Year’s resolution for our area: “For councils and planners to appreciate that we live in a beautiful area with a unique landscape, Stop building on it!

“There are enough brown field sites near to towns without destroying green areas.”

For John Stainland is where the heart is and he added: “This is absolutely the best area to run and walk in – and I lived in Norfolk and Suffolk for 20 years”.
