A CAR can be a very powerful weapon and it is only right that those who get behind the wheel understand just how dangerous they can be.
So it’s good to see a group of pupils learning just how powerful a car can be in a unique and very practical way too.
The year 10 and 11 students at Royds Hall High School were given the chance to drive a car – years before they can legally learn to drive.
It’s part of a project to learn more about avoiding potentially dangerous distractions with lessons in braking distances. They also wore special goggles which stimulates the sensation of being drunk so they could see for themselves how dangerous it is to drink and drive.
Let’s hope it is a lesson they remember when they go out as a group in a car when they are a little older.
Far too often we hear of terrible tragedies involving young drivers and their passengers. If it saves just one life, then it’s a very worthwhile lesson.
