IT gives us no great pleasure today to report on the damage and misery left in the wake of marauding gangs of youths.

In the latest incident disabled mother Denise Burns had her car stolen and set on fire.

She walks with a stick after a stroke 10 years ago. Her blue badge was clearly on display in the car.

Robbing her of her much-needed car is a sickening act by mindless idiots who haven’t the brains or sensitivity to comprehend the terrible anguish this type of act can cause.

The lowest of the low.

Unfortunately, this form of empty-headed vandalism is all too common.

These activities have to be condemned without reservation but, unfortunately, condemnation will not be enough to stop these morons in their tracks.

Some people will know who the villains are. Sadly, even if the louts are arrested, they will get a telling-off and a fine they probably won’t pay.

It is no easy task to solve the problem of this general disrespect for others and inability to act in a civilised way. Certainly, fancy slogans and popular pronouncements from politicians have not provided the answers.

But it is the lack of responsibility displayed by some parents which beggars belief.

Heavy penalties, including custodial ones, for both children and parents are probably one good way forward.
