A GAMBLE by Colne Valley Tory MP Jason McCartney paid dividends for a charity knitting club.

Mr McCartney was given a free £25 each-way bet on the Grand National by bookies Ladbrokes in Huddersfield.

He put the cash on 16-1 shot Tea for Three which romped home in third place, landing Jason a £125 pay out for a charity of his choice.

Jason chose to support the Extra Club, a group of charity knitters, based at the Drop By Centre at Sycamore Court, in Golcar.

Committee member Carol Sykes said the donation came as a big surprise.

But what wasn’t a surprise was what the group will spend the money on – wool!

The 20-strong group, all women, knit clothing or blankets for good causes such as premature babies in Britain or needy families in Africa.

The Drop By Centre offers a range of groups and activities throughout the week, from computers to rug-making.

Carol said: “It was great that Jason thought about us and, of course, we’ll be spending the money on more wool. Our group is really good socially. It’s all knitting and nattering!”

The group meets on Wednesdays from 1pm-4pm.

Keen football fan Mr McCartney admitted he was no racing expert and said: “I picked the horse because the jockey was wearing Huddersfield Town’s colours.”
