YOU report that some members of Kirklees Council were annoyed with Barry Sheerman’s concern about the plan to allow Tesco to build a supermarket on one of the busiest and already very congested roads through the town.

In view of Tesco’s somewhat questionable reputation in dealings with local authorities I consider that Mr Sheerman was very wise to question what exactly is being planned. It is a pity more of our councillors did not support him.

One would hope that the council would engage the services of a highly qualified independent body to scrutinise extremely carefully exactly what lasting benefits the town would get to compensate for the considerable traffic congestion this new building is going to cause.

It would also be reassuring to hear that if, after very careful consideration, building permission is granted there would be thorough and regular inspection of what is actually being done on the site.
