A £600,000 sports facility has been unveiled at Huddersfield New College.

The college held a four-day launch event for its state-of-the-art Sports Barn.

The celebration of the new facilities culminated in a glittering opening ceremony.

The multi-functional Sports Barn at the Salendine Nook college, renowned for its sporting excellence, was completed in August last year.

During the celebrations the college played host to a number of sporting events, which pupils travelled from around the country to take part in.

The opening ceremony evening kicked off with 44 gifted year 3 and 4 pupils taking part in a special session.

This was led by the college’s own level 3 sports students, with activities including disability sports such as wheelchair basketball and New Age Kurling.

A canapé and drinks reception was held in the dining area.

Live music was provided by second year musical students.

Throughout the evening, collections for local charity Life for a Kid were lead by Jamie Marsden, Head of Academies at the college.

Special guests included Danny and Jenna Brough, Eorl Crabtree, Michael Lawrence, Leroy Cudjoe and Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Martyn Bolt was on hand to officially open the Sports Barn.

Instead of cutting the ribbon, Clr Bolt bowled a golden ball at a golden wicket.

The evening concluded with a presentation for the Student Ambassadors, to recognise their work and achievements for the past academic year.

Head of Sport, Gabriel Mellor, said: “The provision of these fantastic facilities are helping to inspire the next generation of sporting stars.”
