WALKERS and ramblers are putting their best foot forward thanks to the latest exhibition at Colne Valley Museum.

The exhibition, Colne Valley Tracks and Trails, Past and Present, which runs until February 4, charts historic and modern routes in the Colne Valley through maps and photographs.

It also illustrates the history and development of the valley, the importance of public footpaths and the role of the local authority and local walking groups in maintaining the public footpath network.

The exhibition also highlights a series of leaflets of walks, The Colne Valley Trail, originally produced by the Colne Valley Society in the 1990s and illustrated by Maureen Astley-Mullen.

The Golcar-based museum hopes to reprint them in the near future, once the walks have been checked and the information brought up to date.

A variety of leaflets and books of walks in the area are available, including one for the Golcar Ginnel Trail created by members of the Golcar Lily Environment Group.

The exhibition has been put together with contributions from the Huddersfield Ramblers Association and the Marsden Walkers Are Welcome group.

A new Walkers Are Welcome group based in Golcar and Slaithwaite (GAS WAW) hopes to raise its profile and enrol new members.

Several walks have been arranged to coincide with the exhibition. They will start and finish at the museum and anyone wishing to join should go along to the museum in Cliffe Ash, Golcar, signposted opposite St John’s Church.

Off road car parking is available by permission of Golcar Cricket Club, located behind The Commercial pub in Swallow Lane.

Good walking footwear and waterproofs are essential although the walks are not designed to be too taxing.

The next walks from the museum are the 10-mile Colne Valley Circular this Saturday (January 26,10am) and the Marsden WAW, a seven mile walk taking in Outlane, Pole Moor and Moorside Edge, on Sunday (January 27, 11am).

More information about the exhibition and the walks is also available on the museum’s website www.colnevalleymuseum.org.uk
