New female get fit programme to launch at The Zone

The course at The Zone in North Huddersfield is 8 weeks long and starts next month

New get active sessions for women at The Zone Leed Road

A free get active programme for women is building on its success due to continued funding from Sport England.

The course, the second to be hosted at The Zone on Leeds Road, will start next month and run for eight weeks.

Huddersfield Community Trust at the Zone are leading on this programme and are delighted to offer this course free to all participants.

Fourteen regular attendees took part and have recorded a total weight loss of 163lb over the eight weeks averaging just over 11.5lb each.

The idea takes inspiration from the extremely successful ‘Get Fit’ programmes that are running at The Zone in partnership with either Huddersfield Town or Huddersfield Giants.

Participant Cara Hanson said: “As a mother of two young children, I struggle to find the time to exercise and care for myself.

Through this eight week programme I have already lost 15 pounds, have a lot more energy and feel more confident about myself. It has given me the motivation to continue making healthy choices for myself and my family.”

Offering both activity taster sessions and weight management advice to women aged over 16 the initiative has been extremely well received. Theory topics have included interactive sessions on portion sizes, alcohol, smoking and diabetes. The unique practical taster sessions on offer have included powerhoop, pom fitness, ballet, circuits and dodgeball.

Following their own personal success two attendees on this course will return for the start of the next course as ambassadors and act as part of the support team for all new participants. Cara Hanson and Libby Leach will take on these roles.

Libby said: “Since starting Get Active in May, I have lost just over 7lbs. I feel so much better in myself, more motivated to do exercise. I have also learned and made a few different changes to my lifestyle in the way I eat which has helped me lose this weight. I am going to continue with my weight loss.”

The next course will begin with an introductory session on Tuesday September 9 and run for eight weeks until Tuesday October 28 2014. Every week the session will last from 5.30 – 7.30pm which will include an activity session and a theory session discussing relevant topics such as eating well, portion sizes, shopping on a budget and body image.
