Deighton has a new multi-use games area!

After more than five years in the pipeline, the project, led by the Leeds Groundwork Trust, has transformed the Riddings Road space to be enjoyed for generations to come.

And the new facilities were officially unveiled on Saturday.

A climbing wall has been installed, with two archways linking the facility to the existing children’s play area.

The former kick-about area/basketball court now has rebound fencing to prevent balls going astray.

Andi Briggs of Deighton and Brackenhall Intiative said: “The project has transformed what was a bleak but well used site into something fit for purpose, providing much more space and opportunity for children and young people to play and is also more attractive for the wider environment than the previous site arrangement. DBI believes this is a fantastic example of how partners working together can achieve something of real value and benefit for the community.”

Funding for the project has come from various sources including SITA Trust who have awarded a grant of £58,700 and The Veolia Environmental Trust who have awarded £37,829. Both these grants have been awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund. Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative (DBI) have also awarded £47,874 towards the work.

The Leeds Groundwork Trust’s Capital Programme Co-ordinator, Jon Crossley says, “The new multi-use games area will encourage children and young people to enjoy sports in a safe and secure environment. We are delighted that work is now underway.”

The work has been carried out in partnership with Kirklees Council and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing.
