Plans to convert an abandoned Victorian Terrace into a shop in Birkby have been given the go-ahead.

The new shop will be on 59 Blacker Road and create three full-time jobs.

Kirklees Council received an application from Mujahid Rashid in May and his application was approved recently.

The convertion will also see a flat created above the shop and a small rear extention.

A report produced by a planning officer reads: “I have no concerns with the proposed change of use; however I do have concerns with the proposed installation of a shopfront.

“59 Blacker Road, remains one of a few in the terrace whose original architectural composition remains intact, and has not been subjected to alterations or modifications to accommodate a retail unit.

“It is considered that the property could successfully be converted in to a successful retail unit without the need to install a shopfront, just a sensitively designed fascia.”

The house has been uninhabited for over three years.

Mr Rashid has taken advice from the council and the convertion will be sympathetic to retaining as many of the features of the building as possible.

The property also falls within Birkby Conservation Area.

The building will be secured with shutters to cover the shop front when the busines is closed.
