AN international organist is jetting in from New York for a performance in Brighouse.

John Scott is currently director of music at New York’s principal Anglican Church, St Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue.

But he’s returning to his native Yorkshire to give the opening recital of an extensive European tour.

As part of it he will play at St Martin’s Church, Brighouse on July 11.

The programme is highly varied with contrasting pieces to suit all tastes and his recital will feature the church’s grand organ and chamber organ.

Mr Scott was born in 1956 in Wakefield and became a cathedral chorister.

While still at school he gained the diplomas of the Royal College of Organists, winning the major prizes.

In 1974 he became organ scholar of St John’s College, Cambridge.

After leaving Cambridge he was appointed to the principal position of Organist and Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral.

In the summer of 2004, after a 26 year association with St Paul’s Cathedral, he took up the post of Organist and Director of Music at the Fifth Avenue church.

He was awarded the LVO in the New Year’s Honours List of 2004, a personal gift of The Queen in recognition of his work at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Jonathan Bielby – Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral from 1979 to 2010 – will be introducing the Brighouse Parish Church recital.

Tickets are £9 (£7 concessions) from church members, by phone 01484 715238 or at the door on the night, subject to availability.

The price of the ticket includes a buffet supper with wine and soft drinks.
