BIRDSEDGE

The Village Hall is up and running with groups now getting used to the new layout. Fund raising continued with a plant sale on Saturday May 16 from 10am with refreshments and cake stall in the hall. Wind in the Willows, the musical by The Library Theatre Touring Company, will be performed on Sunday 17 at 2pm, refreshments and bar. Ring for tickets 01484 604289 - £5 and £3. Quiz Night is back on Friday 29 at 8.30pm with bar and supper. The hall bar is open Friday and Saturday evenings 7.30-11pm with bar snacks available 8-10pm. (See the new hall logo, left)

Brian Kay took the Family Service on Sunday. He read the first 16 verses of Psalm 119 ‘Blessed are they whose ways are blameless’. He showed one of his collection of 27 bibles, which was in Pitman shorthand, and conducted two quizzes to keep the congregation on its toes. Next Sunday will be a Worship service.

Hade Edge Children’s/Community Choir will be in concert at Birdsedge Church Sunday May 17 at 6.30pm to raise money for church improvements. Refreshments will be served. For tickets at £3 each ring Pat Wood on 01484-606624.

CLAYTON WEST

The fifth Sunday of Easter was celebrated with Parish Communion at All Saints’ Church, Clayton West. This was a joint service with the parishioners from St Augustine’s Church, Scissett. Rev Joy took as her theme for her talk Christian Aid Week, based around the readings from Acts 8 and the Gospel of John read respectively by Raymond Parker and George Lane. Despite economic recessions, the majority of the population in this country is able to provide for others who are less fortunate than ourselves, providing we have that willingness to do so. The Christian Aid campaign is one of the most successful ways of raising funds to provide sustainable ways of life for many people throughout the world. During the communion, O Taste and See by Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of the items sung by the choir. Jonathan Newcombe was the conductor and was also the organist for the day. Prayers for the wider world were written and delivered by Alan Reardon. Refreshments were served after the service.

The new church wardens – Jean Newby and Jane Stanley – will be inducted to their posts this week and the prayers of the congregation go with them.

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was led by Rev Richard Thompson whose theme was God's Love Is For Everyone. Bible readings from Acts and John were given by Beryl Holt and Peter Holt. Les Barber read from John and was interspersed with meditations by Rev Thompson. Stewards were Joan Bond and Betty Booth and a gift of flowers for the communion table was from Margaret Firth. After the service coffee was served by Rosalyn Beevers.

Clayton West WI met on May 6 when resolutions were discussed and voted upon and this was followed by refreshments. There was also a sales table. The next meeting will be on Wednesday June 3 and will take place at the Kirklees Light Railway at 7pm and members will once again be making hanging baskets.

DENBY DALE

Zion Wesleyan Reform Chapel, Denby Dale. The children's club was held on Friday evening.

On Sunday morning the Sunday School heard about Jesus telling His followers to be fishers of men and then the youngsters made a banner for the chapel.

On Sunday evening Freda Whitnall from Barnsley was the preacher when she spoke about What Manner of Man is This and gave many illustrations of the kind of person Jesus is. The organist was Robert Nuttall.

Tomorrow morning the monthly Sunday family service will be held at 10.30am On the theme of Why, What and Wherefore when questions about the Christian faith and the Church will be answered.

The juniors at Denby First School are working with local sculptor Mike Disley on a small stone sculpture to be included in an installation in the centre of Denby Dale. On Friday a wine tasting evening was held at the school. The school’s gardening club is going from strength to strength. The club hopes to produce lettuce, peas, strawberries, beans, courgettes and potatoes. Anyone interested should go down for 12-noon on Tuesdays.

EMLEY

The Rev Christine Bullimore celebrated Holy Communion on Sunday at Emley Parish Church. Prayers were led by Graham Russell, Eileen Roughsedge and Jayne Ryder read the Bible. Malcolm Jessop played the organ. Malcolm Tracey based his sermon on the Gospel reading from John 15 about Jesus saying ‘I am the vine and you are the branches’. As Christians we need to share our faith and show God’s love to reach out to the community at large.

KIRKBURTON

There were two services in All Hallows Parish Church on the fifth Sunday After Easter.ŠMr John Marshall greeted the young people along with parents and friends to a special family service of Church 4 All which was ledŠ by Mrs Lorraine Lockwood. She gave a talk on Jesus’ invitation to his partyŠ using the parable of the rich man. Mr Geoff and Mrs Doreen Slater performed the duties of sidesmen and took up the collection. The singing was accompanied by CDs. After the service, Mrs Joanne Smith and Mrs Jean Sutcliffe served refreshments. In the evening, the Curate, the Rev Robert Chambers led a service of Holy Communion and took for his theme, The Vine. Readings were given by Mr Chambers and churchwarden, Mr Glyn Phillips. Mrs Doreen Barraclough was the organist.

The special guest at the Burton Friendship Club when they met for their weekly meeting at The Hub, was TV personality and Examiner columnist, Mr Wilf Lunn. He gave an entertaining talk about some of the innovative and entertaining gadgets he had made and brought some of them along to demonstrate to the members. He was thanked for an enjoyable afternoon by Mrs Hazel Ramsay. Mr Gerald Hibertson was the winner of the raffle.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s held their meeting in the village hall last Thursday. The bingo line was won by Phyllis Grange and the full house was shared by Marion Kelly and Dora Mettrick. The first three numbers on one card was won by Betty Cassinelli. The whist high of 93 was won by Colin Littlewood, and the low of 65 went to Eunice Ramsden from seven tables. Members celebrated the birthdays of Ruth Sheffield, Eric Fieldsend, Joyce Tyas, Ken Briggs and Jack Elliot and Jean and Barry Jessop and Shirley Barker were welcomed as new members. Raffle prizes were won by Sylvia Stevenson, Evelyn Astin, Marjorie Johnstone and Dora Mettrick

SKELMANTHORPE

The preacher for Sunday morning service at the Wesleyan Reform Church was Christine England of Barnsley. Her Bible readings were from Psalms. Organist was John Orton.
