MOUNTAIN rescue volunteers have had an ale brewed in their honour.

And 10p from every pint of Rescue Red sold will go towards Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT).

The 3.8% red ale is brewed by The Nook Brewhouse, Holmfirth, in honour of the team which the brewery has supported for years.

It is hoped sales of the brew will help HVMRT build a dedicated headquarters at Robert Ashton Memorial Park, Meltham.

Nick Mason, of The Nook Brewhouse, said: “Rescue Red will be available at The Nook Pub throughout the festive season and is already proving to be a great hit with the locals and real ale enthusiasts alike.”

HVMRT provides volunteer search and rescue services for the southern half of West Yorkshire.

Averaging 18-20 incidents a year, its members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to incidents on the moors and upland areas.

The team, currently based at Marsden Fire Station, assists police with missing person searches in rural and urban environments.

It also helps the ambulance service with casualties in difficult-to-reach situations.

HVMRT volunteer Owen Phillips said: “The team’s running costs usually come to about £10,000 a year, but this does tend to creep up year-on-year. We make all of this from the generosity of the public and donations from charitable groups and those we have helped directly.

“Naturally, the new HQ project ups the stakes considerably – we need to raise a substantial amount of money to get the project off the ground. We’re trying to do this with some sense of urgency given the uncertainty surrounding the future of Marsden Fire Station, where our headquarters is currently located.

“To be supported in such a way by The Nook Brewhouse is really good news for us – we’re hoping that people enjoy the ale and every pint sold means a little bit more money to help us continue our work.

“More than that though, we hope that everyone who sees the beer on sale is reminded that we are there and that we need the help of the public so we can continue to help out when we are needed.

“We can’t thank the Nook Brewhouse enough for helping us to raise this awareness.”
