MOST of us put our kitchen waste, which can be messy at times, into receptacles normally lined with some sort of bag to protect from soiling both that container and the grey dustbin to which it will be moved when full.
This is even more important now that our council has reduced the frequency of refuse collection to fortnightly – at best!
The good old supermarket plastic carrier bag, having served its primary purpose, plays an ideal second role as a pedal bin liner, being free, waterproof and of the right size. Paper bags are not a suitable alternative, they disintegrate when damp.
If we are no longer to bring our shopping home from the supermarket in their plastic bags we will be forced to buy plastic bin liners from some other source, an added expense for us with no net reduction in our use of plastic.
Of course biodegradable plastics are what our environment urgently needs but although supposedly these have been available for some time they seem to have made little impact as yet.
