Parents and residents are calling for speed restrictions in Birkby Road, claiming school children are being put at risk.

And they say that the route has been overlooked for funding after plans for digital speed monitoring devices was awarded for Lindley and Almondbury by Ward Forums.

Residents claim the road at Maple Gardens is ‘dangerous’ despite being a bus stop for local children who travel to Halifax schools.

One said: “Maple Gardens is the designated pick-up and point and drop off point for the local children who travel to Crossley Heath School in Halifax.

“Parents’ cars are parked and children are crossing in a continuous stream of traffic from Birkby to Halifax Road travelling up to 50mph.

“Normally this situation would warrant a 20mph zone with extensive road markings and manual patrol.

“But unfortunately due to the oversight this is a tragedy waiting to happen.”

Meanwhile, as reported in the Examiner recently, councillors have agreed to spend thousands of pounds on speed measures in the Almondbury areas, Lascelles Hall Road, Quarry Lane and Fenay Lane.

The cost of 8,500 per device will be funded through their local committee.
