YES, Mrs S Jagger, of Fartown (one of the older people like you, your words not mine!), has had memories stirred by your query regarding “pobs”.

My late father, Gerald Cass, who worked at ICI for many years, suffered from what was then known as ‘ICI tummy’. This was thought to be caused by breathing in fumes created by the resins etc made on the Leeds Road site.

Thus his diet, while not entirely favouring strongly milk-orientated dishes, such as porridge, fish in sauce, etc, did have milk as a common ingredient to many.

It was thought to help as a preventative. When, however it got really bad, and he had to brought home – more than once – in the ICI ambulance, he had “pobs”. Bread in milk with salt and pepper. Makes you wonder what the “elf and safety politzi” would make of that! He'd have probably got counselling too!
