IT is now more than three years since plans were first put forward for a new building on the site of the former Castle Hill Hotel.
This is a Greenfield site within a scheduled ancient monument. It is surprising that consideration should have been given to building there at all. It is wholly unacceptable that after so long a wait no progress appears to have been made. The time is long past when a compulsory purchase order should have been applied for; no one can claim that without a building the site has much value.
Many other developments, in particular the proper control of access to the summit, cannot be implemented until this matter is settled. Kirklees authorities seem to exhibit a special tenderness towards the tenants of the site. They were very dilatory in ordering them to pull down their illegal construction and now we have another inexplicable delay.
The hill holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Huddersfield. Let our representatives act on our behalf.
