Concern has been raised over the poor state of play areas in North Huddersfield.

Detoriating paint work and crumbling play area surfaces are just some of the problems residents have raised.

And the timing of the issue could not be more topical as schools have now broken up for the summer.

These pictures were taken at the play area behind the Sheppard’s Arms at the top of Cowcliffe Hill.

Resident Dan Hoggard said: “I’ve got a three-year-old and nine-year-old and live nearby so we go up there regularly.

“It is looking very tired with paint coming off the frames and the floor surface wearing away.

“We had a goal post vandalised about eight months ago and I walked around with the park ranger to get it repaired.

“They have recently also come and put more wood chippings down where you could see the concrete underneath.

“I had asked a while ago whether there were any plans to refurbish the park but was told there were none.

“I just feel that other parks in the area often in a better state of repair than this have been refurbished - like the one at Fartown behind the old police station where they have fancy zip wires and the rest of it.

“Here at Cowcliffe Hill it is overgrown and is being left to deterioriate.”

The Examiner has asked Kirklees Council for a response, but none came at the time of going to press.
