ONE of the town’s historic buildings looks like it could be given a new lease of life and it’s something which the whole community are backing.

The historic Newsome Mill was put on Britain’s most endangered buildings list by the Victorian Society after it had been left to fall into a state of disrepair.

The Grade-II listed building was a working textile mill until 1983 and was iconic and well-loved for its clock face.

But spates of vandalism, flytipping and even theft of the clock’s glass meant the site looked neglected.

But now the community are welcoming news that the site could finally be renovated.

Developers want to turn the office building into a house and build new homes on the site.

The Newsome Ward Community Forum has given the plans, submitted to Kirklees Council, the thumbs up.

It’s time to move forwards and make the best of our heritage, and buildings like Newsome Mill can retain some of their former glory yet still be useful properties to allow them to continue to have a place in our town and a link with the past.
