A HUDDERSFIELD youngster took to the skies in search of Father Christmas and his reindeer.

Newsome girl Sophie Edwards was among a group of deserving children who were given a festive treat by Ryanair and staff at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Sophie, 11, who is battling leukaemia, joined other children whose lives have been touched by a life-threatening illness for a day of Christmas activities.

The children were greeted at the airport by staff dressed as pantomime characters, fairies and an array of elves.

They then joined in the party fun searching for Father Christmas high in the skies above Yorkshire – before being joined on board by the man himself and his helpers with sacks of gifts in tow.

The flight included festive games and Christmas carols.

Tony Hallwood, airport commercial director, said: “We are pleased that Ryanair have chosen Leeds Bradford to host this festive flight.

“We wanted to ensure that families in the region who may have been touched by illness or have had a difficult year can have some precious quality time this Christmas.”

Maria Macken, of Ryanair, said “We are delighted to be able to offer families who have had such a hard time this year, a day to remember.

“We were very happy to see the children getting into the party spirit, arriving dressed as princesses, super heroes and fairies.”

Sophie’s mum Emma said: “She had a really good time and enjoyed herself very much.

“She started school at Honley High in September and is doing very well there.”

Sophie added: “I liked the bit best when the plane took off and the people on it were really funny”.
