STUDENTS were in the sporting spirit when they were joined in a rugby match by another school.

Rugby league enthusiasts Whitley Bay High School travelled south to Huddersfield for a friendly against Salendine Nook High School.

The match was a treat for the North East school as it was a warm-up for their Carnegie Champion Schools clash with Wigan-based St Edmund Arrowsmith.

The event also saw Whitley Bay reunited with their previous coach and now Giants development officer Steve Beaty.

In a very tight match Salendine Nook won 24-20.

Mr Beaty said: “It’s fantastic to see two rugby league schools come together regardless of distance to play and enjoy the sport.

“The game was incredibly competitive and the level of skill on offer was unbelievable.

“Great defensive play from both teams ensured the game was close.

“Both Salendine Nook and Whitley Bay’s players were a credit to themselves and their schools alike.”

The day was topped off by a stadium tour of the Galpharm stadium.

There was also a special question and answer appearance by Giants star Luke O’Donnell.

The Giants, together with the schools, are looking to ensure that the fixture becomes an annual event in the Rugby League calendar.
