IT IS a local landmark, one that many pass on their daily drive across the Pennines.

But how many appreciate what a remarkable piece of engineering lies behind the construction 40 years ago of Scammonden Dam?

To mark that milestone, Yorkshire Water – which owns the reservoir – is carrying out £220,000 of improvements to encourage more of us to visit the dam.

For though many of us regularly drive over the dam, built as part of the motorway construction project in the Sixties, few probably give much thought to the vision and technical skills involved in its creation.

Today the motorway offers a reliable link between two neighbouring counties while the dam provides water for Huddersfield and the surrounding area.

The bonus is that the sympathetic use of the natural landscape has ensured that Scammonden Dam is both useful and a spectacular landmark with much to offer walkers and others who appreciate the countryside.

Yorkshire Water hopes that the new work will encourage more of us to enjoy the wonderful views and the natural beauty of the Pennine landscape. And so do we.
