RESIDENTS unable to stand were able to join in from their chairs at a ‘Sit and be Fit’ Zumba session at an Almondbury care home.

In a bid to get residents active, Southfield Court Care Home held the chair-based Zumba session.

It was organised by Home Instead director James Little and his mum Anne who is currently running an exercise organisation and studying for a PhD in physical exercise and motivation in the elderly.

James said: “It has been very successful, some people got up to dance.

“Those who weren’t able to did get involved in some other way.

“By using familiar music and low-impact, fun routines, we wanted to show the difference a song and dance can make.

“People were choosing the songs they wanted to hear also.”

The session was organised as part of Dementia Awareness Week – which finished on May 26.

James continued: “We wanted to provide people with plenty of information about dementia and raise some awareness.

“It as important for people to know there are positive steps being made in the study of Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Home Instead provides home care to elderly people, allowing them to stay in their homes for as long as is possible.
