A project to build a skate park extension in memory of Holmfirth teenager Isaac Atkinson is more than half way to achieving its dream.

Skate4Isaac, founded in memory of the 14-year-old former Holmfirth High School pupil, has raised £32,000 of the £55,000 it needs to extend Sands Recreation Ground skate park.

The organisation, established by Isaac’s dad Paul and his stepmother Sandra, are hoping a mini music festival at Holmfirth Picturedrome on March 23 at 2pm will bring the target closer.

The all-ages ‘Concert4Sands’ features local musicians Folkus, White Wolves, Lucy Roberts, Imagine That, Anarchy in the Ukelele, Druce and Jones, Jacob Fullalove, Porchlizards, Old Man Pie, Hiding from Olive and The Chokes.

Tickets at £6 for adults and £3 for children are available from Wishes Card and Gift Shop, Huddersfield Road, or from the Picturedrome on the night.

There will also be ‘ArtAuction4Sands’ at The Picturedrome’s Box Office bar on the day at 2pm, with works donated by artists including Mick Kirby-Geddes, Brendan Hesmondhalgh and Andy Fullalove.

Isaac, a skateboarder and drummer, was found hanged in his bedroom two years ago.

Skate4Isaac was set up to improve the skate park, which Isaac’s enjoyed.

The park, originally opened in 2002, includes a couple of ramps, a rail and some ‘fun boxes’.

The extension will include a stair set with handrails, more ramps and a bowl.

The project has proved popular with skateboarders, roller-bladers and other youngsters in the Holme Valley.

A non-uniform day at Holmfirth High in October raised £1,000.

Paul said: “It feels great to have broken the £30,000 mark. The amazing thing is how it’s pulled the community together.”

Sandra gave special praise to volunteers Alexis Smith, James Crossland, Alison Steele and Isaac’s school friend Hebi-Leigh Esposito.

She said: “They’ve been right there from the beginning. Some of them didn’t really know Isaac but they’ve gone the extra mile and Hebi has done all the Facebook and Twitter stuff as well as the wristbands.”
