It’s been a six months in the making but the hard work has really paid off as Skelmanthorpe Brownies transformed a car park into a community garden.

In November last year the youngsters and their leaders launched a project to create a seated garden, a wildlife garden, a flower area and also a stone garden, featuring pebbles hand-painted by the Brownies.

The girls planned and designed the area at the community centre and applied to nearby companies for sponsorship.

Organisations to cough up cash for the project included, Pennine Garden Centre (£200), Denby Dale Parish Council (£450) and Locala Community Partnerships (£200).

Work started by the girls weeding the bottom end of the car park and marking out where they wanted to put each section of the gardens.

The brownies cleared rubbish for the seated area and moved a lot of the stones and brambles out of the way. Dad’s, Adrian Williamson and Martin Holdsworth, then did the groundwork, paving and fencing.

The girls got busy with planting before the official opening on Sunday, May 18 by Denby Dale Parish Council chairman, Clr Kelvyn Waites.

The launch event featured stalls and refreshments, raising £110, which will be used to take the brownies on a trip to say a great big thank you for all their hard work.

Unit leader, Beverley Williamson, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to all the Brownies, Beth Wood, Adrian Williamson and to all the parents who helped with the gardens and on the day of the opening.”
