LEAD thieves have struck again at a church that suffered thousands of pounds of damage in a raid eight months ago.

Last July, lead flashing was ripped from the roof of Slaithwaite Methodist Church, landing the congregation with a £4,000 repair bill.

Last weekend, thieves were back at the Carr Lane building.

The lead was marked with Smartwater – a special liquid that contains a unique forensic code only visible under ultraviolet light.

But Mark Mercer, who looks after the church, said: “I question whether the morons who do this sort of thing can actually read the warning notices.

“And if they can, will it bother them anyway?

“They do not expect to be caught. And if they are caught they need not expect any significant punishment.”
